Space Shuttle Discovery is grounded again after it was mundanely discovered to be leaking fuel, but one man’s concept for Space tourism may just put the romance back into Space exploration.
That man is Yelken Octuri, a man who usually works on concepts for Airbus’ interior designs. His concept: a rocket that takes honeymooners to space. Whereas most would consider going with New York holidays or with honeymoons in any equally romantic metropolitan destination. But Octuri’s design acknowledges that with space travel being specifically opened up to private companies in Obama’s new plan for NASA, the need for specialised tourist vessels in the private sector could be a lucrative market for engineering companies like Airbus.
Space tourism (and soon exploration in general) is entirely dependent on Russia’s Soyuz rockets, which are derived from a Cold War design.. Prices range from $20-35 million and is subsidised by research the individual agrees to conduct in space.
The honeymoon rocket concept launches five honeymoon domes and their couples into orbit.. The honeymooning pods are released into orbit and they open a giant glass ceiling, offering spectacular views of the Earth and stars. Their near-spherical design rotates and generates internal gravity. The pod has a flower-like appearance because of it’s retractable solar-power shield. When it returns to earth, it plunges into the ocean much like the rocket designs used in the Apollo missions. The design has certain tongue-in-cheek clues that it’s not an entirely serious project. Whilst most rockets are unquestionably phallic, Octuri’s decision to place large spherical boosters either side of the main tower gives it a silhouette quite unlike any you might see on the launchpad during your Florida holidays. The name would also probably see revision before leaving the production line: Hornymoon.
Though Octuri hasn’t revealed a price-tag for a trip in his honeymoon rocket, one can speculate that most couples would be eloping on Las Vegas holidays for their ceremonies.
